There are generally two types of pet sitting: Pet sitters that come to the house at specified times to feed, bathe and taking it for a poop, and dog walkers who takes your pet for an exercise run around the block. These are the most common services that pet parents look for when they are off for vacation or travelling for work. Some of our elderly and disabled customers hire pet sitters from PetBacker to care for their pets or take them out for an exercise.
The exact length of the visit is determined by both pet owners and pet sitters, averaging from fifteen to forty-five minutes. Other pet sitters will not only care for the pets but also live at the pet owner’s house so the pets have a constant companion, or at least a companion at night.
Pricing for these services vary but tend to be priced lower than that of commercial boarding facilities with some pet sitters charging for additional value added services like grooming. Most pet sitters bill clients on a per-visit or a per-day basis. Additional charges can be incurred for multiple pets, travel expenses, and other special services.
Because the pets are in their own comfortable space many of these charges are unnecessary and reduces stress on your pet. Including meals for a live-in sitter can add to the total bill, but is generally cheaper than add-ons at boarding facilities.
Pets can also show signs of stress when their owners are away but it tends to be less severe when they are in familiar surroundings of their own homes. Statistics show that hardly any pets suffer from stress induced bloody colitis when they are cared for by a live-in sitter.
Having a sitter also has the advantage of protecting the pet owner’s home. Newspaper and mail collection by the pet sitters eliminate "away from home" signals to possible “bad guys.” Live-in sitters create near normal household activity that discourages potential robberies.
Live-in sitters can also take phone messages and care for indoor and outdoor plants without adding significantly to the cost. Live-in sitters are more likely to recognize potential health problems sooner and can arrange for the pets to be seen by a veterinarian. Our experience is that pets with live-in sitters tend to be subjected to less separation stress.
PetBacker offers optional training, testing and credential reviews of pet sitters in the form of certifications or accreditations. The curriculum of pet sitting programs may include pet care, health and first aid, animal law information, nutrition and behaviour. We have a certification program that requires the pet sitter to agree to a criminal background check, proof of insurance, proof of bonding, certificate of completion of our virtual classes, pet first aid program, documentation of business ownership and any other evidence to support their professionalism and adherence to minimum pet sitting industry standards. Please negotiate via the messaging feature in the PetBacker app before you hire the pet sitter and pay through PetBacker for your peace of mind. Always engage a pet sitters with good reviews and more trust points instead of just looking for the best price.
