Because being around pets is like a therapy to me.
Sometimes in my everyday life I tend to get stressed. But as soon as I see a pet or even just any animal I feel a lot calmer and happier.
I used to have a dog sadly he died about a year ago, but what I experienced with him was that he didnt do harm to anybody unless he was mistreated by that person before. Also we never trained, but we sometimes didnt let him inside the house when he was dirty, but after a while, even if the door was open he wouldnt enter until we said he could.

Right now we have two cats, they are both a bit lazy and not very playfull and mostly they just mind tgeir own business.
But everytime that we are away for at least two days, they would do anything for our attention and lay on top of us when we are sitting or sleeping.
